Cruising Destination Ideas

Admit it. Before you took that first cruise, your thoughts about cruise ships and cruise vacations consisted of flashbacks to Love Boat re-runs. Cruising was all about sunny, tropical destinationslike Bermuda, Mexico and Hawaii.

Since traveling by cruise ship is more popular than ever before, thanks to its affordability, you can not only go to those sunny destinations but also to more unusual ports like Hong Kong, Alaska, Norway and the Amazon River.

Still, a lot of cruising is done in warm weather. The Caribbean is one of the most popular places for first-time cruisers to go. Among the places to choose from are the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. There is also the Dominican Republic,Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Usually, cruise ships heading for the Caribbean set sail from ports along the Eastern United States coast as well as Florida. The same applies to beautiful Bermuda.

People who live on the West Coast of the United States often cruise to Hawaii and its islands. The main goal of some vacationers is simply to see the black sandy beaches of Punaluu. Cool Alaskan cruises are a big deal not only because of the sights but also because of the cool side trips that can be taken. Passengers can gaze at glaciers either by land, by helicopter or even a guided walking tour. They can go salmon fishing or relive some of the history of the Gold Rush days at some of the Alaskan ports. These cruises also offer up some wildlife in the process. Passengers have been known to spot humpback whales, moose, wolverines, sea lions and bears.

If it is winter time in the United States, you can bet that veteran cruisers may be heading to places in South America like Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires to indulge in their summer seasons in an exotic locale. Some of the more adventurous may decide on an Amazonian cruise or choose to cruise the Galapagos Islands.
The Indian Ocean may appeal to some with an eye for less commercialized ports of call. Some of these ports include African islands like Madagascar, the Seychelles and the Spice Islands. Plus, you could even extend your vacation to include a Kenyan safari.

The Mediterranean Sea beckons to the cruisers who are history buffs. Some of the places rich in history include Italy and the ruins of Rome including the Colosseum. Greece is another popular Mediterranean destination seeped in history. The islands of Corfu and Crete are often included in a Grecian cruise. Visiting other parts of Europe are a must for those seeking a travel back through time. From Scottish castles to the Latin flavors of Barcelona, Spain, there is something for anyone.

Deciding where to go is one of the hardest parts of cruise travel. For a lot of us, budget dictates where we can go. Want a warm, sunny place or a cool cruise to Alaska? No matter what your pocketbook says, there are fabulous destinations to be cruised.

Changes to Australian Working Holiday Visa programme

Significant changes to Australia's popular Working Holiday Maker Visa came into effect on 1 July 2006. The changes give holiday makers the opportunity to work and study for longer in Australia and the chance to extend their visa for another year by offering an increased selection of seasonal jobs in regional areas.

Working Holiday Maker (WHM) Visa applications are now subject to the following changes:

• increased work rights; the ability to work for any one employer for 6 months, rather than the 3 previously allowed
• increased stuffy rights; the ability to study for 4 months, rather the 3 previously allowed
• increased selection of seasonal jobs in regional areas; leading to a second working holiday visa of an additional 12 months

'Although the primary group of applicants for this visa are young gap year students, university students and backpackers, in the last 12 months or so we've seen a significant increase in the number of young professionals taking career breaks,' said Oonagh Baerveldt, spokesperson Australian Visa Bureau.

'They are frustrated or feeling burnt out and want to take a year out. The WHM visa is a good solution because you don't need to dip into your savings to travel – you work to travel.'

'The ability to work in the same job for 6 months means travellers can choose to be transient or settled whereas before they were looking for a new job every 3 months,' said Baerveldt. 'This 'new and improved visa' is ideal for travellers who are looking for a careers change and want to spend some time studying and some time gaining practical experience.'

'We're expecting a considerable spike in the number of WHM visa applications we receive over the next two weeks. Since these changes were announced it's been relatively quiet and we've even held back applications on request that they only be lodged on or after 1 July,' said Baerveldt.
'Anyone interested in taking a year or two out in Australia under the Working Holiday Maker visa program should visit our website and complete the WHM Online Assessment to make sure they meet all of the requirements,' said Baerveldt.

Australian Working Holiday Maker Visas are available to passport holders from 11 different countries, including the United Kingdome and Ireland. Visa applicants must be between the ages of 18-30 (inclusive), have no dependent children and must be able to support themselves financially for the duration of their trip to Australia.

The Australian Government issued 93, 760 working holiday visas in 2003/4; of those 47, 321 were to UK and Irish

Flights, Travel, Holidays, Vacations

Almost anyone will probably agree that in a perfect world they'd be able to travel more. It is one of the most natural human desires to want to see different parts of the world and experience new things. And anyone who has traveled will probably agree that you don't really appreciate or think about your home too much until you have the perspective of seeing how people live in other parts of the world, so this can be easier with cheap flights.

The problem of course, is that travel has always been expensive. Although airfares have gotten cheaper over the years, they are still expensive enough that most people don't fly regularly, and this is likely to remain the case. So unless you plan on suddenly getting rich, you're going to have to come up with some discount travel solutions if you want to fly more, and a great thing to look into if you're looking for a cheap flight are charter flights.

Charter flights are cheaper because they work on a different system than a started airline flight. A standard airline will have a set route between two cites: an airline will fly a certain amount a times a week between two cities, and this remains constant regardless of the amount of passengers. In other words normal airline routes function like bus routes, and sometimes there may only be a few people on the plane. It is this need to average out costs - to be able to afford all those times when the plane is a third full - that leads to high airfares.

A charter company can offer cheaper fares by working in a different fashion: they will charter an entire plane from an airline for a particular date and time, and thus receive a heavy discount on the cost. They can then pass some of this discount on to you by offering a lower per seat price for the flight. Most charter companies operate along very common routes during peak times - for example, sunny vacation spots during the winter.

Charter flights are much more reliable then other more radical ways of obtaining discount airfare, and fares will generally get cheaper as the departure date approaches. There is a certain amount of risk, however: a charter company can decide to cancel a flight if they haven't sold enough tickets. Unlike a regular airline, which constantly has planes going to multiple destinations, the charter company may not be able o immediately put you on another plane. So instead of waiting a few hours it's likely that if your charter flight is canceled you'll either be receiving a refund, or waiting at least a day or two for another charter - which of course can ruin any vacation.
That being said, there are many large and reliable charter companies, and charter flights - while not offering discounts as big as can be found through other discount travel methods - remain a reliable alternative to regular airfare. And if you're flexible and willing to buy a ticket on short notice, you can find many excellent airfares from charter companies, making charter flights one of the more popular discount traveling methods.
